Washington, Sept 11 : Late tenor Luciano Pavarotti's secretly dreamt of becoming a tennis ace.

The 71-year old Italian opera star, who died of pancreatic cancer last week revealed his dream to U.S. sports commentator Bud Collins but swore the pundit to secrecy.

Collins wrote a few lines in an obituary dedicated to the opera singer revealing his desire to be a professional tennis player.

"Luciano Pavarotti would have loved to be a professional tennis player," Contactmusic quoted Collins, as saying.

"He told me that one day in 1980 while we were watching John McEnroe gliding toward a second U.S. Open title at Flushing Meadow, New York.
