Hollywood actress Emma Thompson has revealed that she would have never married her first hubby director Kenneth Branagh, if the couple would have used counselling before they exchanged their marriage vows.
London, Nov 30 : Hollywood actress Emma Thompson has revealed that she would have never married her first hubby director Kenneth Branagh, if the couple would have used counselling before they exchanged their marriage vows.
The 48-year-old said that she believes that couples in love should prepare themselves better before they wed.
The 'Love Actually' star accused her former hubby Branagh of damaging their relationship by being a workaholic.
"Both my wedding days were incredibly joyful - days full of love and glory," the Daily Express quoted her, as saying.
"But I wish that in our society we had more of a tradition of really preparing people for marriage itself. There's something to be said for the preparation for any long journey," she said.
"You've got to make sure the boat is well victualised and sturdy enough not to fall apart halfway across the water. And people who are newly in love don't always think of those things.
"I think if Kenneth and I had had counselling before we got married, we might well have thought twice about it," she added.
Thompson divorced Branagh in 1994 after five years of marriage.
"When I was married to Ken, he was always working and I fought and fought to slow things down and to say: 'Come on, let's have a life.' But he just carried on working. I used to run a bit just to keep up with him. I don't work nearly as hard any more. I love working but the fact is I love living, too," she said.
However, things are very different with her second husband actor Greg Wise who is the father of Thompson's daughter 'Gaia'.
As for Wise, the actress said that he is the most decent person she has ever known.
"Greg is the most decent person that I have ever known - kind to the root of his being, and I admire that about him immensely. I just couldn't live with someone who was not kind, because it's so important," she said.
