London, Nov 28 : 'Into the Wild,' written and directed by Sean Penn, has bagged the honour for best feature at the 17th Gotham Awards.
The awards, given by the Independent Feature Project, have gone to winners in six different categories.
The award for best documentary went to 'Sicko,' the most recent film from veteran provocateur Michael Moore, reports Variety.
The best ensemble cast award was a tie, going to both 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead' and 'Talk to Me.'
'Into the Wild's' star, Emile Hirsch, while receiving the award, said: "When this film came along, I was 35 pounds overweight sitting on a couch with a shaved head. I'm not anymore."
'Juno' star Ellen Page won the award of a breakthrough actor.
Breakthrough director went to Craig Zobel who helmed 'Great World of Sound.'
'Frownland' won the award for the category of Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You.
The evening included six tributes presented to Javier Bardem, Michael Bloomberg, Roger Ebert, Mark Friedberg, Jonathan Sehring and Mira Nair.
The event was held for the first time at Brooklyn's Steiner Studios, where a range of major films and TV series has been shot.
