Washington, Nov 28 : The musical 'Hairspray' took the top award at the 53rd Evening Standard Awards.
The production has music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman.
It has already won eight Tony Awards out of 13 nominations and has played for over 2,000 performances on Broadway.
At the awards, it was Rupert Goold's critically lauded revival of 'Macbeth', which was the event's sole double winner, reports Variety.
'Macbeth' is set in an unspecified totalitarian state. The leading man of it Patrick Stewart drew the actor honours at the awards.
The awards were voted by a group of five London theatre critics and were presented on Nov 27 in a lunchtime ceremony at the Savoy that was notable chiefly for its lack of surprises.
Play honours went to Simon McBurney and Complicite Theatre Company for 'A Disappearing Number,' while playwright Polly Stenham took the most promising newcomer nod for her dysfunctional family drama 'That Face'.
The National Theatre landed two awards for its productions, with Anne-Marie Duff taking the actress prize for the title role in George Bernard Shaw's 'Saint Joan', and Rae Smith and the Handspring Puppet Co. winning for their design collaborations on the dark children's epic 'War Horse'.
Newcomer nod went to Stephen Wight for his roles in two plays by Patrick Marber, 'Don Juan in Soho' at the Donmar Warehouse and 'Dealer's Choice' at the Menier Chocolate Factory.
