Washington, Nov 27 : The Weinstein Co. is hoping to land actor John Cusack for period drama 'Shanghai'.
The studio has already roped in actor Gong Li, and is negotiations with Cusack.
Mikael Hafstrom will be directing the pic from a script penned by Hossein Amini.
If Cusack does sign on, he will be playing an American who returns to a corrupt, Japanese-occupied Shanghai four months before Pearl Harbor and discovers his friend has been killed.
While he unravels the mysteries of the death, he falls in love and discovers a much larger secret that his own government is hiding.
On board as producers are Phoenix Pictures topper Mike Medavoy and Barry Mendel, with Arnie Messer on as executive producer.
The pic is set to be filmed in Shanghai.
