James McAvoy bags Best Actor Award at BAFTA Scotland

James McAvoy was honoured with the Best Actor Award at the BAFTA Scotland award ceremony, held in Glasgows City Halls on Monday night.

London, November 19 : James McAvoy was honoured with the Best Actor Award at the BAFTA Scotland award ceremony, held in Glasgow's City Halls on Monday night.

He was awarded in recognition of his performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's doctor in hit film 'The Last King of Scotland'.

"I am very pleased to have won the award. It's nice to get it at home in Scotland, in Glasgow and in front of my family," the Scotsman quoted him as saying.

"I've played a lot of Englishmen, and for Scottish BAFTA to forgive me for that and award me for playing a Scotsman is very humbling," he added.

The film, which is based on English author Giles Foden's novel about Amin's brutal regime, also bagged awards in the Best Feature Film and Best Screenplay categories.

The event also saw Scotland's rising talent Sean Biggerstaff taking home an award for his performance in BBC4's Consenting Adults, about the 1957 Wolfenden report into gay rights.

'Black Watch - A Soldier's Story' got the Best Documentary Award at the ceremony, which was attended by over 800 guests and hosted by the GMTV presenter Lorraine Kelly.

While the Best News and Current Affairs Award went to the BBC's special Newsnight Scotland programme 'Did Your Vote Count?', while BBC Scotland's 'Nina and The Neurons' won the award in the Best Children's category for the second year in a row.

Scottish sitcom 'Still Game', produced by The Comedy Unit with the BBC, won the Lloyds TSB Scotland Audience Award for most popular television programme.

The Best Actress Award went to Sophia Myles, the only nomination in the category, for her performance in 'Hallam Foe'. She, however, did not attend the award ceremony.

Alison Forsyth, the director of BAFTA Scotland, said: "This year's awards have been the biggest and best ever. Over 800 people attended the event and a galaxy of Scottish stars presented and received awards."

"It has been a fantastic evening and we are once again delighted that we have the support of Lloyds TSB Scotland, who have helped make the night such a memorable one," Forsyth added.
