Bart Simpson is the best drug counsellor for kids

They may be cartoon characters, but when it comes to teaching kids the dangers of drugs, no one does a better job that The Simpsons, especially Bart Simpson.

London, May 5 : They may be cartoon characters, but when it comes to teaching kids the dangers of drugs, no one does a better job that The Simpsons, especially Bart Simpson.

London Metropolitan University boffin Richard Ives insists that the cartoon family gives a more accurate pictures of the dangers of messing about with drugs, than lessons in the classroom, which though "worthy", are also extremely boring for kids.

Ives heaps praise on episodes where Bart Simpson gets high on "an all-syrup Squishee", while mum Marge "drinks spiked water and trips", and dad Homer takes dope.

"What characterises these drug references, apart from their humour, is their accuracy and level of detail," The Sun quoted him, as saying.

He insists that any episode of The Simpsons would be a 'fantastic starting point' to hold discussions on drugs in the classroom.

"Any one of these would provide a fantastic starting point for class discussion about drugs," Ives said.

And though he insists that lessons should not be "spiced up", Ives wants teachers to realise that the "worthy, good-intentioned" education they doll out to school kids might be too "boring" to catch the youngsters' attention.

"It is no wonder that worthy, good-intentioned but boring education for prevention fails to make an impact on drug use," he said.
