Film freaks in New Delhi gave a mixed review to the film as it opened in scores of theatres in the city.
'Shootout in Lokhandwala' is an action-film based on a real life incident that occurred on November 16, 1991, where Mumbai Police gunned down a dreaded gangster named Maya Dolas and his men in a residential building at a suburban complex.
It boasts a stellar star cast with Bollywood biggies like Sanjay Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan, Viveik Oberoi essaying important characters.
The film is also supported by actors Amrita Singh, Suniel Shetty, Tushar Kapoor, Rohit Roy, Dia Mirza and Abhishek Bachchan.
The film comes as a shocking, hypnotic look at a real-life disaster.
On a calm summer day in 1991, in the bustling Lokhandwala complex, five criminals including Maya and Dilip were counting 70 lakhs in flat no 32 B, when 286 policemen, headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Aftab Ahmad Khan, took strategic positions around their building.
Most viewers feel the film is ruled by Sanjay Dutt (who plays ACP Khan) andiveik Oberoi (Maya Dolas), both of whom have given excellent performances.
"The best thing... Amitabh Bachchan was good and Sanjay Dutt gave a power packed performance," said Sooraj, who watched the first show of the film.
"I liked Sanjay Dutt a lot. The music is good, the movie is good and Sanjay Dutt is good. And we are getting to see something on terrorists etc," said Vikram Joshi, another filmgoer,
The film is supposed to be a comeback for actors like Vivek Oberoi and Tusharapoor. Even director Apoorva Lakhia, after forgettable movies like "Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost" and "Ek Ajnabee", seems to have put in a lot of effort in this film.
The premiere of the film was a star-studded affair in Mumbai. Most of the film's stars were present, including actor Sanjay Dutt.
"One has hopes from every film whether it is a big or small budget production. But there are a lot of hopes pinned to this film because it is a big budget film and maybe even the biggest film this year," said Sanjay Gupta, producer of the film.
"I'm feeling great and I know this film will do well... It was a great experience working with Apoorva Lakhia and I had a great time." said Dutt. The film depicts the countries most-talked about daylight shootout lasting six hours that transformed suburban Mumbai into a virtual war zone.
