London, June 10 : A British judge on June 8 sentenced pop singer George Michael to 100 hours of community service and banned him from driving for two years for driving under the influence of drugs.
Michael had pleaded guilty on May 8 to a charge of driving while unfit in the course of drugs, which carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison.
Police said Michael was found slumped at the wheel of his car in north London after witnesses observed the vehicle weaving onto the wrong side of the road.peaking outside the courtroom, Michael accepted responsibility for his crime but branded the "media coverage of this trial farcical".ichael added he was glad to put the trial behind him, and was now off "to play the biggest show of my life at Wembley".
In court the singer's lawyers were firm that his guilty plea was tendered only on the basis that his unfitness to drive was due to the sleeping tablet and his natural exhaustion.
But Michael Grieve, representing the singer, said that the court experts agreed that the presence of GHB could have been caused naturally.
Grieve said Michael would be hit hard by a driving ban because "he is not somebody, for obvious security reasons, who can use public transport".
