Martin Sheen slams Bushs bullying over Dixie Chicks barbs

Legendary actor Martin Sheen has once again hit out at American President George W Bush for handling criticism from country trio the Dixie Chicks in a very callous manner.

Washington, July 5 : Legendary actor Martin Sheen has once again hit out at American President George W Bush for handling criticism from country trio the Dixie Chicks in a very callous manner.

Band member Natalie Maines publicly criticized Bush saying that she was 'ashamed' that the President of the United States was from her native state Texas, ten days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The comment angered many country music fans and resulted in a boycott of the Dixie Chicks' music.

The degree of hatred directed toward the Chicks including death threats, provoked concern among the band about their safety and that of their families.

The 66-year-old believes that Bush's response to the singer's remark was not like that of a 'true Christian', for had he been one, he would have invited the band to his barbeque and settled down the raging controversy.

"I saw what happened to the Dixie Chicks. If George W. Bush were a true Christian, like he proclaims himself to be, you know what he would have done? He'd have invited them to his next barbeque to play and say 'Hey, I love their music and whether or not I agree with them, I support their right to free speech,'" Contactmusic quoted Sheen, as saying.

The actor insisted that Bush was a 'bully' who 'enjoyed watching what happened' to the band.

"But instead he was a bully. And he enjoyed watching what happened to them ... it gave him a sense of power and righteousness," he added.

Earlier, Sheen had slammed the President insisting that he was an 'all an image' who kept a false pretence of being a regular guy, but in reality is rather cold to his people's sentiments and did nothing to help the band.

"If you're the president, and you're sitting on a 70 per cent approval rating, you just let these girls hang out to dry. They're getting death threats, their CDs are being burned and concerts cancelled. And you say nothing, because that's who you are," he said.
