Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has threatened to quit as artistic director of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games if China does not take any action to curb violence in the Darfur region.
Washington, July 29 : Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has threatened to quit as artistic director of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games if China does not take any action to curb violence in the Darfur region.
His spokesman has revealed that he may take a decision in this regard in the next month.
"Steven is one (of) many advisers to the Beijing Games and he is trying to use the games to engage the Chinese on this issue," Contactmusic quoted his spokesman, Andy Spahn, as saying.
"Steven will make a determination in the next few weeks regarding his work with the Chinese. Our main interest is ending the genocide. No one is clear on the best way to do this," he added.
Spielberg's warning comes days after actress Mia Farrow criticised him for supporting the games.
"Does Mr Spielberg really want to go down in history as the Leni Riefenstahl of the Beijing Games?" she had said.
China is a major investor in the African country's oil industry, and has been criticised for its failure in sending United Nations peacekeeping troops to Darfur. The Chinese have also been accused of selling weapons to Sudan.
Spielberg had recently written to Chinese president Hu Jintao urging him to use his influence to encourage Sudan to accept peacekeepers.
