Washington, July 28 : The way John Travolta's film 'Hairspray' has been welcomed by audiences has given a boost to the Broadway musical of the same name, which had been observing a gradual downfall in its business for the last five years.
The musical, based on the original 1988 John Waters movie, became a certifiable hit in 2002, earning rave reviews and eight Tony Awards. But eventually its business started declining.
However, the success of the new flick has turned things around.
"We had a moment when other people were thinking maybe 'Hairspray' was winding down a bit. But now I feel like I've got a show that's just reopened. The movie has given it a whole new life," Variety magazine quoted Margo Lion, lead producer with New Line Cinema of the legit version, as saying.
"We're a brand. Finally! It's hard. It took five years. But a wide-release movie that people want to see clearly helps" she added.
Lion says that the a national marketing campaign for the film also benefited the Broadway show, the their advance is up half a million dollars. Weekly wraps have climbed since mid-June and are now up almost 400,000 dollars.
'Hairspray' musical has had a fate similar to 'Chicago', 'The Phantom of the Opera' and 'Rent', all of which benefited from movie adaptations.
"This is a situation where a show, once it's started its downward trend, bumps back up. I think the movie will help extend the life of 'Hairspray' both in New York and on the road. And if we can enhance it with casting, even better," Lion says.
