Dame Helen Mirren, who portrayed a Womens Institute (WI) stalwart in the film Calendar Girls, does not have any desire to become a member of the organization in real life because she thinks that some of its activities are ridiculous.
London, July 25 : Dame Helen Mirren, who portrayed a Women's Institute (WI) stalwart in the film 'Calendar Girls', does not have any desire to become a member of the organization in real life because she thinks that some of its activities are "ridiculous".
The Oscar-winning actress played Chris Harper in the 2003 movie that featured Julie Walters, Annette Crosbie and Celia Imrie as Yorkshire WI members who appear in a nude calendar in aid of charity.
However, she feels that women of the WI are more determined to devote their time and efforts to the voluntary organization, instead of making a successful career for themselves. She corroborates her belief with the example of Tricia Stewart, the inspiration for her character Chris, who could have become a top executive.
"Meeting Tricia, who was a very big personality, it was hard for me to understand how someone like that could live within such a small, confined community. Where did all that energy go? When there was an opportunity for it to go somewhere, she created this calendar," the Daily Express quoted her as saying.
"That woman could have been the head of a major industrial company, yet it all went into baking cakes and going in for those ridiculous WI competitions. They are wonderful women, who could have risen to the very top. It is just that they have not chosen that route and instead have got married, had children and enjoyed their lives. I am not being critical," she added.
Mirren, who is married to American director Taylor Hackford, also said that she does not regret her decision of not having children, unlike the real-life Calender Girls.
"I did not think, and do not think, children were for me. I have not changed my mind with age," she said.
The actress, however, shares one thing in common with the ladies of the Rhylstone WI, and that is removing her clothes, an activity which she does not rule out doing again in the future.
"I'm a nudist at heart," she laughs.
