US Potter publisher sues two companies over violation of sales embargo

The United States publisher of Harry Potter And the Deathly Hallows, the latest Potter book, has sued two companies who broke a sales restriction on the novel.

Washington, July 20 : The United States publisher of Harry Potter And the Deathly Hallows, the latest Potter book, has sued two companies who broke a sales restriction on the novel.

Scholastic Corp. said it was taking legal action against book distributor Levy Home Entertainment and DeepDiscount.com for violating an embargo preventing the seventh Harry Potter book from being sold in America before its official publication date of July 21.

Scholastic has alleged that Levy delivered the books to the online retailer, allowing customers to purchase the book before its official publication date.

The American publisher is seeking undetermined damages from the two firms for "complete and flagrant violation of the agreements that they knew were part of the carefully constructed release of this eagerly awaited book".

A statement from Infinity Resources Inc., which owns DeepDiscount.com, said that the company was scrutinizing the whole matter, adding, "We take the situation very seriously and are conducting an internal investigation."
