Kylie Minogue gets OBE from the Queen

Pop star Kylie Minogue has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her contribution to music in the annual honours list handed out by Queen Elizabeth II.

Sydney, Dec 29 : Pop star Kylie Minogue has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her contribution to music in the annual honours list handed out by Queen Elizabeth II.

The honour follows the Aussie pop sensation's comeback from cancer, which inspired millions all over the world.

Speaking from Melbourne, Australia, where she has been celebrating Christmas with her family, Kylie said she was "deeply touched" to be honoured by the country she considers her adopted home.

"I am almost as surprised as I am honoured to be awarded an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen," News.com.au quoted her, as saying.

"This last year I have felt so much love and support from everyone as I took greater steps back into the public domain, and it is with absolute gratitude and joy that I say farewell to 2007 and look forward to what the New Year will bring," she added.

Minogue gained her first big break on Australian television in the daily soap "Neighbours" before making the transition to music with her first UK number one being "I Should Be So Lucky" in 1988.

Veteran chat show host Michael Parkinson was awarded a knighthood, as was the chief executive of Marks and Spencer, Stuart Rose, for reviving the ailing high street icon.

Sir Ian McKellen has been honoured with a Companion of Honour, while veteran star Leslie Phillips, 83, has become a CBE.

Comedian and actress Julie Walters is made a CBE and Harry Potter actor Richard Griffiths, 60, gets an OBE.

Trevor Romeo, 44 also known as Jazzie B, the frontman for the 1980s band Soul II Soul receives an OBE.
