Washington, Dec 28 : The Hollywood writers' strike and the deaths of filmmakers Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni have topped the American Film Institute's (AFI) list of "Moments of Significance" for 2007.
On Dec 27, AFI's 13-member jury, which includes film scholars, artists and critics, announced seven events that had an impact on the world of the moving image during the calendar year 2007, reports Variety.
Describing the strike as "part of a larger paradigm shift," the AFI said the labour battle is part of "the ongoing digital revolution (that) has upended conventional economic models, and uncertainty abounds when attempting to project how an audience will receive its storytelling in the years to come and how creators will be paid for their work."
The list also features the iPhone, which was described as a "symbol of the exploding on-demand culture."
The list also called attention to a great trend in filmmaking brought on by the war on terror, with movies such as "In the Valley of Elah," "Lions for Lambs," "Grace Is Gone" and "A Mighty Heart."
Such films were described as the "most immediate cultural response to war in American history and a stark contrast to the pro-war pics that unspooled during World War II."AFI also recognized two TV evolutions, one of them being the "hyper-tabloidization" of TV news, reflected in 2007's endless coverage of the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.
The other TV evolution on the list was the redefinition of the TV "season," reproduced in the growing popularity of hits such as "Damages" and "High School Musical 2" on cable.
Finally, AFI paid tribute to veteran directors Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni, whose deaths this year marked "the end of an era."
