Mackintosh replaces Lloyd Webber as most influential figure in British theatre

Sir Cameron Mackintosh has topped The Stage magazines list of the most influential figures in British theatre, pipping stage mogul Andrew Lloyd Webber.

London, Dec 28 : Sir Cameron Mackintosh has topped The Stage magazine's list of the most influential figures in British theatre, pipping stage mogul Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The magazine said that Mackintosh's deal to scale Chinese-language productions of musicals including "Les Miserables," "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Miss Saigon" helped land him the top place.

It is the fourth time Mackintosh has topped the list since it began in 1997.

"Cameron Mackintosh has never been out of the upper echelons of The Stage 100 but has had to wait nearly a decade to regain top billing," BBC quoted Stage editor Brian Attwood, as saying.

"This year he presents an unassailable case for the number one slot. In the West End, he has led the way by refurbishing his playhouses at a cost of £35m, while on television, his production of Oliver! is the BBC's latest musical theatre talent show.

"Meanwhile, his agreement with Beijing will introduce his productions to a potential audience of millions and guarantees him an unrivalled global influence," he added.

Lloyd Webber was pushed to the second place, having topped the list with the producer David Ian last year after their unbeaten television talent show 'How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?'

The list also included Howard Panter and Rosemary Squire, who run the Ambassador Theatre Group, and National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner.

Nica Burns and Max Weitzenhoffer, whose Nimax firm runs five West End theatres, rounded off the top five.

Actor Kevin Spacey, who runs London's Old Vic Theater, was ranked 14th.
