O Holy Night voted UKs Favourite Christmas Carol

O Holy Night has been voted as UKs Favourite Christmas Carol for the fifth consecutive year.

London, Dec 24 : 'O Holy Night' has been voted as UK's Favourite Christmas Carol for the fifth consecutive year.

The song received a flurry of votes in the radio station Classic FM poll after it was sung by Rhydian Roberts in the reality show 'X Factor' final.

'O Holy Night' was written in 1847 by French wine merchant, Placide Clappeau and was composed by Adolphe-Charles Adam.

Just days after it had been completed, the carol received its first performance at midnight mass on Christmas Eve 1847 in Roquemaure in France.

John Sullivan Dwight translated the carol into English, and since then it has been performed at Christmas services all over the world.

'O Holy Night' is believed to have been the first piece of music to be broadcast on radio when it was played on Christmas Eve, 1906.

" O Holy Night has a special place in the nation's heart and sums up the true meaning of Christmas," Times Online quoted Darren Henley, the managing director of Classic FM, as saying.

'Silent Night' bagged the second position while 'Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,' took the third spot.

'In The Bleak Midwinter - Darke' and 'O Come, All Ye Faithful' landed the fourth and fifth spot respectively.
