British comic genius Sacha Baron Cohen has announced that he will never reprise his roles as Kazakh journalist Borat and rap star Ali G again.
Washington, December 22 : British comic genius Sacha Baron Cohen has announced that he will never reprise his roles as Kazakh journalist Borat and rap star Ali G again.
Telling the reason for deep-sixing Borat's role, he said that the character's phenomenal success had left him unable to ambush any more unsuspecting victims.
The 36-year-old star said that ditching the two roles was a sad farewell.
"When I was being Ali G and Borat, I was in character sometimes 14 hours a day, and I came to love them, so admitting I am never going to play them again is quite a sad thing. It is like saying goodbye to a loved one," People magazine quoted him as telling England's Daily Telegraph.
Cohen said that his Borat films had exposed the character to much wider audiences, as a result of which his ambush-style antics became impossible.
"It is hard, and the problem with success, although it's fantastic, is that every new person who sees the Borat movie is one less person I 'get' with Borat again, so it's a kind of self-defeating form, really," he said.
Cohen spent almost two years in Borat's character while making and promoting last year's block buster 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan'.
He appeared at various public events as the anti-Semitic, homophobic, misogynistic reporter.
"If I'd done the entire promotional campaign for Borat as myself it wouldn't have developed in the same way. To me, it should be entertaining and the entertainment should carry on," he said.
Last January, the actor had indicated on National Public Radio that he was contemplating quitting the two roles.
"I think the days of me going undercover are probably over," he had said at that time.
Cohen, who welcomed a baby girl with his wife Isla Fisher in October, clarified that his family responsibilities had nothing to do with his professional decisions.
"I try and keep that part of my life separate from the professional part because I don't think it helps people appreciate the work or the comedy or make me any funnier if they know what's going on at home," he told the Telegraph.
