Shirley MacLaine has signed on to star as Coco Chanel in Lifetimes miniseries on the fashion icon.
Washington, Dec 21 : Shirley MacLaine has signed on to star as Coco Chanel in Lifetime's miniseries on the fashion icon.
The veteran actress will play Chanel in her later years, a period when she re-established her reputation as a fashion trendsetter.
The younger version of Chanel, in the series to be directed by Christian Duguay, is to be played by 'In Love and War' star Barbora Bobulova.
Enrico Medioli has penned the script, which follows the rise of Chanel, starting with her upbringing in an orphanage outside Paris.
Duguay said that the script had been penned with great care because he wanted to make the miniseries 'meaningful'.
"We've worked hard with it, and turned it into something that is meaningful and worth making an event miniseries," Variety quoted him, as saying.
"There's no point in doing it if it won't educate people and entertain, but in an original way. It's a love story, it's a rags-to-riches story, it has some strong social statements about women and about how the world has changed."
On board as producers are Lifetime, Alchemy, Lux Vide SpA, Pampa Productions, Rai and France 2.
Chanel, who died in 1971, was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
