Will Smith starrer I Am Legend topped the weekend box office with an earning of 76.5 million dollars, scoring the best December opening of all time.

Washington, Dec 17 : Will Smith starrer 'I Am Legend' topped the weekend box office with an earning of 76.5 million dollars, scoring the best December opening of all time.

The sci-fi remake has become Smith's biggest-ever opener, and the highest-grossing film version of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the same name.

In second place on the list complied by Exhibitor Relations was Fox's 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' which raked in 45 million dollars.

The two movies' combined earnings accounted for about 80 percent of all ticket sales among the weekend's Top 12 movies, reports E! Online.

Third highest grosser for the weekend was family comedy-drama the Nicole Kidman-Daniel Craig starrer 'The Golden Compass' with an earning of 9 million dollars.

The top five was rounded off by Disney's 'Enchanted', a movie that pokes fun at Disney princess adventures, and 'No Country for Old Men' that raked in 6 million dollars and 3 million dollars respectively.

The top 10 films based on Friday-Sunday estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations are:

1. I Am Legend, $76.5 million

2. Alvin and the Chipmunks, $45 million

3. The Golden Compass, $9 million

4. Enchanted, $6 million

5. No Country for Old Men, $3 million

6. The Perfect Holiday, $2.97 million

7. Fred Claus, $2.31 million

8. This Christmas, $2.3 million

9. Atonement, $1.9 million

10. August Rush, $1.8 million
