Denise Van Outen defends reality TV stars stage stints

British stage actress and TV presenter Denise Van Outen has defended the trend of using reality TV winners for West End productions.

Washington, Dec 10 : British stage actress and TV presenter Denise Van Outen has defended the trend of using reality TV winners for West End productions.

She said that the professional actors should be indebted to such celebrities as they are in a way helping them to get work.

The reality TV stars include those like Connie Fisher, who won the role of Maria in The Sound Of Music after winning 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria'.

"They [reality stars] are keeping other actors and actresses in work," the Daily Express quoted Denise, as saying.

She added: "For example, if Joseph was in the West End now and did not have a name like Lee in it, the show would be closing and the cast could be looking for another job."

"To get people to go to the theatre now you have to have a known face. That is why Chicago is such a Success," she claimed.

This extravagant musical uses revolving casts of guest celebrities.

The 33-year-old star asserted that she wouldn't have the privilege to get her stage roles had she not been a big name on TV.

"I always wanted to do musical theatre but was aware that unless I took the TV route I would always be in the chorus - that's just the way it is," she said.
