Jamie Foxx slammed for defending dog-fighting ringleader Michael Vic

Oscar winner Jamie Foxx has invited huge criticism from animal rights activists by speaking out in defence of dog-fighting ringleader Michael Vic on television.

Washington, Aug. 26 : Oscar winner Jamie Foxx has invited huge criticism from animal rights activists by speaking out in defence of dog-fighting ringleader Michael Vic on television.

As part of a plea agreement to reduce a possible jail term, the American footballer has admitted to funding a dog fighting operation.

He has also revealed that at least six dogs were killed as a result of "collective efforts" by him and two others.

Vick will officially file the plea agreement in a Virginia court on August 27.

Reports about his plea agreement were published a day after Foxx spoke in Vick's favour on US TV news show Access Hollywood.

"It's a cultural thing... I used to see dogs fighting in the neighbourhood all the time... Mike probably just didn't read his handbook on what not to do as a black star," Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

"I know that cruelty to animals is bad, but sometimes people shoot people and kill people and don't get time... I give Mike the benefit of the doubt," he added.

Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals, slammed Foxx for his attempts to justify Vick's sordid secret life.

"It is cheap and dirty and wrong to call this a cultural thing, unless Foxx believes that cruelty is a black thing - when it isn't. "It may be his thing, but it is not a black thing," she said.

She had also blasted Vick when he arrived in the court on Friday.

The sports star faces 12 to 18 months in prison for his part in the illegal dog-fighting ring.
