New Delhi, Aug 23 : A week-long Indian documentary film festival "Open Frame" kicked off here on Thursday, during which about 70 documentary and reality films will be screened from across the world.
Organised by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust (PSBT) in partnership with UNESCO and Prasar Bharti, the festival will focus on an array of subjects like environment, women and sex, AIDS, communal riots, children and many more.
The festival envisages giving a platform to young and mid-career filmmakers to showcase their creative talents. It is also an attempt to attain democratisation of the electronic media.
"We feel that its imperative that the electronic media does not remain monopoly of the big business, big industry or even government and more and more individual voices are able to create content that finds space in electronic media," said Rajiv Mehrotra, managing trustee of PSBT.
The festival began with the screening of 'Bare', a film directed by Santana Issar. The film is an expression of the director's inner conflict, who is trying to confront her relationship with an alcoholic father.
The film does not have a regular narration but is based on actual telephonic conversations with her family.
"I am not just a character in the film, I am also the director of the film. The experience has been remarkable because it is a very personal story, and sure it was difficult to make up every morning and have to bring myself to face issues that I had not confronted," said Santana Issar.
Audiences at the festival comprised predominantly of filmmakers, critics, aspiring students and film analysts.
The festival will go on till September 29.
