Warner Bros., Todd McFarlane set for their take on Oz

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures have joined hands with Todd McFarlane for their own take on The Wizard of Oz.

Washington, Aug 22 : Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures have joined hands with Todd McFarlane for their own take on 'The Wizard of Oz'.

The revisionist take on L. Frank Baum's old classic, which was further popularised by the classic 1939 movie, will be written by Josh Olson.

The film will be produced with Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk while Rick Benattar will be exec producing.

Josh Olsen will write the new take on this old classic, while McFarlane will produce the spook-themed film. The pair are still working on the tone of the project, and will most likely base the look of the characters on a line of action figures that McFarlane created a couple of years ago.

The new version will reportedly be a very dark and edgy PG rating flick inspired by the toy line launched by McFarlane Toys.

Oslen insisted that the 'wild' imagination of Oz books inspired him more than anything else and the film will be more of a sequel than the remake.

"I saw those toys, and Dorothy as some bondage queen isn't something I want to do. The appealing thing about the Baum books to me is how wildly imaginative they are. There are crazy characters from amazing places. I want this to be Harry Potter dark, not Seven dark," Variety magazine quoted Oslen, as saying.

"We still want to take advantage of the first film, which might be the most beloved of all time, and rely on its place in your cultural memory to bubble beneath the surface. A lot of the plot is mine, but the characters are all Baum," he said.

McFarlane and Olson are looking forward to give the best of visual effects to the movie.

"My pitch was 'How do we get people who went to 'Lord of the Rings' to embrace this?' I want to create (an interpretation) that has a 2007 wow factor. You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she's much closer to the Ripley from 'Alien' than a helpless singing girl," McFarlane said.
