Jammu, Aug 22 : A group of 30 dancers from Sri Lanka performed their classical form of dance in Jammu, where they are visiting at the invitation of the state's Academy of Culture and Arts.
"I think they (Indian and Sri Lankan cultural dances) are same but there is little difference in leg movement but facial expressions are same, " said Madhusanka Liyange, Sri Lankan dancer.
"My parents wanted me not come here, but I said that if they had invited us, there must be proper security arrangements, we will dance and come. We had good time and have no fear at all," said Gunila Jayanthi, coordinator of the Sri Lankan troupe.
It was a rare opportunity for the people of the region to get a peep into the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka.
"I liked it a lot; I got to witness the diversity of India. Despite such diversity we are united. It is like the expression 'unified diversity'. It gives us a message that we should live in peace," said Rohit Verma, an audience.
Besides ethnic dance forms of the island nation, Bharatnatyam, the classical Indian dance is also popular in Sri Lanka.
Buddhism, which is the major religion in Sri Lanka, has influenced all art forms in the country and as such Indian culture and Hinduism also have given its dominant and deep mark on it.
