A special effects generator fell over, sending flames onto Gyllenhaal's skirt.
According to American tabloid the National Enquirer, Ledger quickly reacted and dashed to the actress' aid.
Gyllenhaal escaped hurt in the incident, reports Contactmusic.
Ledger is playing villain, The Joker, in The Dark Knight.
