Rome has a population of 2.7 million and has welcomed 11 million tourists in 2011. Of the 11 million tourists who visited Rome in 2011, 5.3 million people visited the Colosseum alone making it Italy's most visited tourist site.

Tourism in Rome brings a large chunk of city's economy because of the high rates for hotel rooms, food and transportation.

In October 2012, the mayor of Rome has instituted an executive order banning eating or drinking anywhere in the city center. The move is a bid to preserve ancient landmarks. The offense is punishable by a fine up to $650. Alcoholic drinks were banned after 11 p.m.
