March 5, 2014 - London
De Bilt, 5 March 2014 - Leading European consultancy and engineering firm Grontmij has been awarded BREEAM's prestigious Assessor Company of the Year Award 2014. The award was presented last night at a ceremony during the Ecobuild Conference at the London ExCel Centre.
BREEAM is the world's longest established and most widely used method of assessing, rating and certifying the sustainability of buildings. The BREEAM Assessor Company of the Year Award has been presented to Grontmij in recognition of the uppermost BREEAM ratings for their projects across a variety of building sectors over the last twelve months, for example:
in the UK, Grontmij secured one of the first-ever 'BREEAM for Offices' outstanding ratings for a speculative commercial building at One Pancras Square, King's Cross Central, in London. At 4 Stable Street, Grontmij obtained the first Fit-Out / Refurbishment BREEAM;
in China, Grontmij designed the world's most sustainable office tower and the laboratories of the 70,000 m2 new build Wuhan New Energy Institute in Wuhan, which is now under construction due to be delivered by early Summer this year;
in the Netherlands, Grontmij designed the new build sustainable offices and laboratories for the Watercampus Leeuwarden. Grontmij was involved as a BREEAM Assessor for the new headquarters of AKZO Nobel in Amsterdam;
in Poland, Grontmij was the first to carry out a BREEAM assessment and has since assessed many new and existing buildings;
in Belgium, Grontmij designed the refurbishment of its own office building in Mechelen and secured a BREEAM excellent rating.
Gavin Dunn, Director of BREEAM, said: 'Many congratulations to Grontmij on winning our BREEAM Assessor Company of the Year Award. Assessors play a key role in achieving high BREEAM ratings for clients, and Grontmij is consistently at the forefront of this.'
Demand for sustainable buildings and cities
Grontmij recognises the growing need for sustainable buildings and sustainable cities worldwide. Barry van Sloten, Strategic Lead for Grontmij's Sustainable Buildings business said: 'We are continuously trying to push our clients' boundaries by embedding sustainable thinking and design in our projects. We apply the newest technology to reduce energy consumption in both new and existing buildings, aiming for buildings with high indoor-comfort and low exploitation-costs across the life cycle. This also underlines the importance of protecting the natural resource base and the environment. A growing part of our business is the work we do on BREEAM certification for buildings and we're truly delighted to have won this award. It's a clear testament to the high regard we hold for sustainability in the design of better buildings.'
