Big Hair, Brick Phones and Dancing Flowers: Hollywood Advertising Agency Celebrates 25 Years With Series of Nostalgic Cartoon-Style Flashbacks
May 22, 2014 - Hollywood, FL
Picture culture and commerce without web sites, mobile phones, online shopping, and social networking. Envision VHS tapes instead of streaming video, Sony Walkmans instead of iPods, and 97 cent gas instead of $3 and up at the pump.
It's life in America 25 years ago -- a different place in a decidedly different world. In 1989, when advertising agency AdServices Inc. first opened for business, there was no Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or YouTube. In that pre-digital age, meetings were done face to face and delivering quality customer service depended on showing up, listening well, and working long hours to fulfill commitments and meet deadlines.
During those early years, founder Steve Fales often worked seven days a week, single-handedly playing the roles of business owner, writer, graphic artist and account executive. Now -- 25 years and countless clients later -- AdServices has grown into a $6 million agency with 23 employees and offices in Hollywood, Florida and New Orleans.
From an early focus on helping local businesses get their messages out, to its emergence as a strategic marketing partner to regional and national companies, AdServices has built a reputation for giving clients an easier path to their goals.
"We've prospered by bringing strong strategic, conceptual and problem-solving abilities to our clients' challenges," Fales explained. "Our attention to detail, work ethic and passion to help them succeed makes for a smoother process and more rewarding collaborations."
With its long-established emphasis on client partnerships over self-promotion, the agency decided to take a less traditional approach to marking its 25th year in business.
"It's common practice for companies celebrating a milestone anniversary to write and talk about their growth and accomplishments through the years," Fales observed. "We decided to take a different kind of walk down memory lane."
Led by Senior Art Director Joe Klucar and Senior Copywriter Alan Williamson, the agency's creative team designed a series of social media posts under the heading 25th Anniversary Flashback. Done in comic book-style illustrations with tongue-in-cheek captions, the posts show singular nostalgic images from AdServices' founding year.
Running the gamut from an oversized brick cellphone and iconic yellow Sony Walkman to a sound-activated dancing flower and trendy mullet haircut, the images offer a lighthearted blast from the past. As a subtle reminder that only some are fortunate enough to stand the test of time, each post ends with the tagline "AdServices: 1989's Enduring Classic."
"We thought about doing a commemorative logo or a history of company highlights," Fales recalled. "In the end, we just wanted to quietly appreciate the clients we've served for 25 years, look forward to the next 25, and celebrate the occasion in an entertaining way."
