Heijmans to develop The Hague's Wijnhavenkwartier

July 2, 2013 - London

Heijmans has reached agreement with the municipality of The Hague and Leiden University concerning the transformation of the former ministries of Justice and Home Affairs buildings in The Hague. The buildings along the Turfmarkt/Schedeldoekshaven will be redeveloped in several phases into a multifunctional reinforcement of The Hague's city centre. Leiden University's 'The Hague Campus' is with one of her locations part of this development. Syntrus AchmeaReal Estate & Finance is planning to acquire 132 of the 170 apartments for some pension funds. The first phase of this area development contract is valued at approximately € 65 million.

"The development of the Wijnhavenkwartier improves the connection between the central station and the city centre. This area forms the link between the two sub-districts within the city centre. By attracting Leiden University's 'The Hague Campus' a key step has been taken in the revival of this area," says alderman Marnix Norder of the municipality of The Hague.

The construction of phase 1 will start in mid-2014 and will accommodate 170 apartments, 224 parking spaces, approximately 1,000 m2 of commercial space and over 13,000 m2 for Leiden University's The Hague Campus. The first phase will be completed by mid-2016.

Heijmans will not only develop and realize the transformation, but effective 1 July will also assume the temporary management and operation of the complex. By temporarily housing the Today Arts Festival, this area development will also take shape during the interim phase.

The development of the Wijnhavenkwartier takes advantage of Heijmans' strength as an inner city area developer, which is also based on embedding the expertise of Proper-Stok more than ten years ago in the Heijmans' organization.
