Town of Vernon Partners With Covanta Energy for Sustainable Waste Management Services

September 14, 2012 - VERNON, CT

Covanta Energy Corporation announced today a new partnership with the Town of Vernon, CT for bundled services that will include sustainable waste disposal and recycling. Covanta is the largest owner and operator of energy-from-waste facilities in North America, and current owner/operator of Covanta Projects of Wallingford, Covanta Bristol, Covanta SECONN in Preston and Covanta Springfield in Agawam, MA.

Covanta will provide one stop shopping for waste disposal, recycling and composting. By bundling services, municipalities like Vernon are able to save money on disposal costs and get credit back in the form of a rebate for recycling. Service is slated to begin in November, 2012 with the contract running for five years with extension options.

"The contract with Covanta gives the Town of Vernon one reliable partner for waste disposal and recycling as well as predictability of costs," said Town of Vernon Administrator John Ward. "Covanta is a true partner and is known for exemplary service, handling waste in a sustainable manner by utilizing Covanta's energy-from-waste facilities instead of landfills."

Since the end of 2011, Covanta has added a number of new partner municipalities in Connecticut including Guilford, Madison, East Hartford, Newington, Southbury and recently, Windsor Locks. With the addition of Vernon, Covanta will manage approximately 90,000 tons of municipal solid waste and 16,000 tons of recyclables per year from these new municipalities. Covanta anticipates partnering with additional Connecticut municipalities in the near future as well.

"Covanta is happy to be continuing a long term relationship with the Town of Vernon that began when we operated the Mid-Conn project in Hartford. Mayor Apel should be applauded for his work to ensure the Town's waste is managed sustainably and reliably," commented Steve Diaz, vice president and regional business manager for Covanta. "We look forward to providing world-class service to Vernon in the many years ahead."

As part of new contracts like the one with Vernon, Covanta provides educational outreach funds to communities. These funds can be used for a variety of projects including hazardous household waste collections and energy-from-waste and recycling education programs.
