CONTROY Gets Its Green Card

June 19, 2012 - HOUSTON, TX

Founded in 1933, CONTROY Orange Liqueur, the original Mexican orange liqueur, is the secret ingredient necessary to create the prefect authentic Mexican Margarita, however it has never been available for purchase outside of Mexico -- until now. Pura Vida Spirits Company announced today that after many years of negotiations, it acquired the exclusive global distribution rights outside of Mexico in 2011 to the ultra-premium liqueur for an undisclosed amount. As of this week, Pura Vida is importing CONTROY to the United States challenging Patron's claim that they have the only Mexican-made orange liqueur.

"Pura Vida Tequila is the perfect tequila for a great margarita," said Pura Vida Founder and Chairman Stewart Skloss. "The addition of the Margarita holy grail, CONTROY, to our family was a lifetime dream come true, let the good times roll!"

The commonly accepted origin story of the Margarita is that it was invented in October 1941, at Hussong's Cantina in Ensenada, Mexico, by bartender Don Carlos Orozco. One slow afternoon, Don Carlos was experimenting with mixing new drinks when a prestigious visitor arrived: Margarita Henkel, the daughter of a German ambassador, who lived with her husband Roy Parodi near the city in Rancho Hamilton. Don Carlos offered the drink to Margarita, and named it after her for being the first person to taste it. It is said that he concocted the margarita with a mixture of equal parts tequila, CONTROY and lime, shaken and served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass. The margarita has since become world famous and is the number one cocktail in the United States.

La Madrileña, owners and distillers of CONTROY and numerous other Mexican brands, reported that 2011 sales of CONTROY in Mexico alone reached almost 1,000,000 bottles due to immense loyal Mexican following and United States citizens who cross the border daily just to purchase the exquisite product. CONTROY will be distributed as CONTROY de Pura Vida in the spirit company's current distribution states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas. As a key luxury item in Pura Vida's portfolio of ever-expanding spirits, CONTROY will be available in other states as well as internationally as they expand outside of Mexico and the United States. "Make sure you ask for CONTROY by name, it will be available in your favorite liquor store, bar and restaurants by July 4th weekend," added Senor Skloss.
