Bergen County Sheriff's Office Selects BridgeWave's Millimeter Wave Wireless Solutions to Fortify Network Infrastructure

June 26, 2012 - SANTA CLARA, CA

BridgeWave Communications, the leading supplier of 4G millimeter wave backhaul solutions, today announced that the Bergen County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) in Hackensack, New Jersey, selected BridgeWave's 60 GHz wireless links to strengthen its network backbone. The wireless links increased network bandwidth and allowed for a redundant backend loop to transmit critical data and applications traffic between the Bergen County Courthouse, Bergen County Jail, Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), and the Bergen County Probation Department.

The BCSO is responsible for a broad range of law enforcement services supporting the almost one million residents in Bergen County. In addition to safekeeping their residents, the BCSO augments the county's municipal police departments and maintains order and security at the Bergen County Justice Center. The BCSO needed a fail-safe system to effectively manage building access control and automation, high-resolution video surveillance, and real-time tracking of key personnel and assets. These applications also required a cost-effective network connectivity solution to backhaul the bandwidth-intensive traffic. Given the requirement for resiliency in the network, the solution also had to provide alternate connectivity paths in the event of a natural disaster or threat to national security.

The BCSO turned to Integrated Mobile Systems (IMSYS) to help identify a secure, reliable, cost-effective solution to streamline their security needs, increase network capacity, and harden their infrastructure. Consideration was given to leasing Metro Ethernet lines for multiple buildings but, with leasing expenses running almost five-thousand dollars a month for gigabit Ethernet, it proved to be too expensive. At an IMSYS technology seminar, the BCSO learned about the IMSYS Presence Awareness System™ (IPAS Secure) -- the latest IMSYS offering combining real-time location tracking, access control, gate automation, video surveillance and two-way audio communications -- and BridgeWave's wireless point-to-point solutions.

"We were impressed that we could implement IMSYS IPAS Secure, obtain the critical backup for our existing fiber paths, and achieve carrier-grade performance using BridgeWave's cost-effective wireless links," said Philip Lisk, director of information technology at the BCSO.

IPAS Secure is a rules-based system that allows for complete control and real-time information across locations. The system can allow for control changes of a location or entire building based on rules defined or the click of a button. BridgeWave's highly reliable, license-free 60 GHz wireless links offer high capacity, carrier-grade availability, and secure connectivity as backup for existing fiber paths. "We are pleased to meet the BCSO's needs from the pairing of our IPAS Secure system with BridgeWave's carrier-grade wireless links," said Heath Gaffney, president of IMSYS. "BridgeWave's wireless solutions have proven to be a reliable economical and trusted method to transport data between links," continued Gaffney.

Set up and installation of the BridgeWave links was quick and easy. Having completed a proper pre-site analysis for the network ring, installation of the BridgeWave 60 GHz links took less than an hour per link to configure and lock in the signals. The network topography allows for two means of connectivity to all locations, allowing the sheriff's office to maintain network resiliency, security and control of all facilities in many situations. Since installation, the BridgeWave links have withstood hurricanes, earthquakes, and intense heat and cold all the while continuing to provide reliable data connectivity.

Commissioning the links has saved the BCSO over $50,000 per year, providing substantial cost savings both in initial project costs as well as continuous operating cost reductions. "BridgeWave's wireless links provide the capacity, security, and resiliency of a wired network in a cost-effective, all-outdoor wireless solution," said Amir Makleff, president and CEO of BridgeWave Communications.
