Three Kauffman Labs Education Ventures Entrepreneurs Named as Finalists in Milken PennGSE Business Plan Competition

May 6, 2011 - Kansas City, MO

Three entrepreneurs in the Kauffman Labs Education Ventures Program have been named among nine finalists in the nation's only education business plan competition. The 2011 Milken PennGSE Education Business Plan Competition, conducted by the Milken Family Foundation and Penn Graduate School of Education, attracted nearly 200 submissions from 38 states and five countries.

Nearly 60 judges reviewed the plans and selected the finalists, who will present their ideas for innovations in teaching and learning to investors June 9, 2011, at the University of Pennsylvania. The winning and runner-up companies will receive $25,000 and $15,000, respectively.

Kauffman Labs for Enterprise Creation, a program established by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, launched its Education Ventures Program earlier this year. The program immersed 23 aspiring entrepreneurs in an intensive, hands-on program designed to catalyze the creation of high-growth companies in the education sector. The Education Ventures who are finalists in the Milken PennGSE Education Business Plan Competition are:

  • Adam Geller, founder of St. Louis-based R3 Collaboratives. The company is creating an online video platform that enables collaborative professional development for teachers.
  • Matt Pasternack, founder of GoalPost. The San Francisco enterprise is developing a platform that helps schools and families motivate students to achieve their academic goals.
  • Alexandre Scialom, founder of theCourseBook. The company, based in San Francisco, is developing an online resource that connects lifelong learners with online and offline learning experiences. The service allows users to easily search for and find third-party learning resources, and offers guidance to support their professional and personal development, based on interests, peers and location.

The Milken PennGSE Education Business Plan Competition is the first competition aimed specifically at stimulating entrepreneurship and addressing challenges in education, developing innovative solutions that boost student achievement and strengthening school effectiveness.
