The Dallas Morning News and TexSom Wine Competition Identifies Trends


March 29, 2011 - DALLAS, TX

The Dallas Morning News and TexSom Wine Competition (DMNTWC) has announced the medalists judged from 2,768 entries spanning 18 countries and 30 US states. The total brings the number of wines judged during the course of the competition's 27-year history to an impressive 54,848 different wines.

This remarkable volume and breadth of entries affords an annual snapshot of wine trends and emerging vintages.

"This year saw the largest group of Tempranillo wines ever, suggesting the growing popularity of Spanish wines among consumers and the wine trade," noted Rebecca Murphy, DMNTWC competition founder and chair. "We received submissions from sites as diverse as the traditional regions of Spain to Oregon, Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico. The judges awarded 34 medals alone for Tempranillo from a record 50 entries in the category."

Another factor raising comment among the judges was the caliber of the 2009 Pinot Noir vintage across the board. "They were thrilled that the young 2009s show such potential," continued Murphy. "This is clearly a year for exceptional Pinots no matter their origin."

A highly-credentialed group of 56 wine critics, distributors, importers, sommeliers, Master Sommeliers, and Masters of Wine made up the judging panels, awarding 173 Gold medals, 476 Silver, and 837 Bronze. The 2011 competition was also noteworthy for the new association with TexSom and The Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas. TexSom (www.texsom.com) is a network of sommeliers based in Texas which produces the country's only sommelier conference with upwards of 300 wine professionals gathering every August to form a network of influential wine buyers.
