San Jose Chiropractor Offers Advanced Foot Pain Therapy With Active Release Techniques

October 27, 2011 - SAN JOSE, CA

Athletes and non-athletes alike who suffer from foot pain caused by plantar fasciitis or other common conditions may find a solution at their local chiropractor. Insight Chiropractic employs Active Release Techniques, or ART, as an integral part of its overall health and wellness services. ART's ability to break up scar tissue, freeing soft tissues to heal and regain their full former range of motion, has become widely adopted in the sports medicine community, and the clinic has found it to be equally effective in treating everyday foot problems.

According to chiropractor Dr. Jennifer Forster, overtaxed muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves can cause a variety of problems in the feet. "The feet are complex structures that must take a tremendous amount of stress on a daily basis," says Dr. Forster. "They must not only bear our weight but also react to sudden shifts in direction or exterior forces. Runners, joggers and other athletes place even more stress on their feet, resulting in a variety of strain injuries. Over time, these stresses and strains take their toll." Plantar fasciitis, for example, occurs as a result of strain and inflammation in the plantar fascia, a band of connective tissue on the underside of the foot.

As soft tissues heal from stress injuries, scar tissue typically forms at the injury site. This scar tissue can build up over the course of severe, multiple or repeated injuries, creating adhesions that limit the foot's range of motion. The thickened scar tissue prevents muscles from extending or contracting correctly, pinches local nerves and puts extra stress on tendons, and can also prevent sufficient delivery of oxygenated blood to the area. People with this kind of scar tissue buildup often experience pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the affected foot.

Dr. Forster explains that active release techniques relieve these symptoms through skillful manual manipulation. "We can use ART to evaluate the tissues of the foot for adhesions that may be impinging nerves or blood vessels or interfering with muscle or tendon action. We then apply pressure in precise motions to flex the tissues and break up old scar tissue. This allows the muscles, tendons and nerves to function normally again, relieving pain and other symptoms in the process."

Active release techniques do not necessarily suit every case of foot pain the clinic sees, but Dr. Forster states that ART's value in the San Jose sports medicine scene extends to everyday life situations as well: "Any of us can develop plantar fasciitis of other painful foot ailments, especially in jobs where we must stand for long periods of time. ART offers an effective, non-invasive treatment for the aches and pains our feet can sustain in the 9 to 5 world." ART may also aid in treating back pain and other physical problems.
