Medline Premier Contract for Surgical Mesh Biomaterials Expanded to Include Revive(R) and Assure(R) Soft Tissue Repair Mesh

April 13, 2011 - Mundelein, IL

Medline Industries, Inc., the nation's largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of healthcare supplies, announced today that REVIVE® and ASSURE® soft tissue repair mesh has been added to their national agreement with Premier Purchasing Partners for surgical mesh biomaterials. The three-year agreement makes the products available to the more than 2,500 U.S. hospitals and 73,000 healthcare sites that are members of the Premier healthcare alliance.

REVIVE is constructed of the Biomerix Biomaterial™, a proprietary, biointegrative synthetic tissue scaffold. This unique structure is designed to play a role similar to that of the body's extracellular matrix, supporting organized tissue in growth. The device is designed for repair and reinforcement in a variety of soft tissue procedures such as inguinal (or groin) hernias.

Inguinal hernias, which account for approximately 700,000 hernia operations annually in the U.S.(3) Statistically, the lifetime chance of having an inguinal hernia is 27 percent for men and 3 percent for women.4 The surgical operation is intended to repair a protrusion of abdominal-cavity contents occurring through the inguinal canal.

ASSURE has two distinctly different sides, one with Biomerix Biomaterial and the opposite side a resorbable lactide caprolactone copolymer film designed to minimize tissue attachment to the device in case of direct contact with the viscera. It's indicated for use in both open and laparoscopic ventral hernia repairs, soft tissue deficiencies and for the temporary bridging of fascial defects.

Ventral hernia repairs account for approximately 420,000 hernia repair operations annually in the U.S.(1) When a ventral hernia occurs, it usually arises in the abdominal wall where the muscle has weakened or where a previous surgical incision was made.(2)
