Los Angeles Pain Relief Center Helps Patients Find Relief With Acupuncture

October 27, 2011 - LOS ANGELES, CA

The Pain Relief Center of Los Angeles has announced that it offers Acupuncture as a complementary therapy for back pain patients, in addition to natural, non-invasive treatments such as chiropractic care and massage therapy. Led by chiropractor Dr. Thomas Marinaro, the Pain Relief Center has helped many Southern California and Beverly Hills patients lead active, pain-free lives, without being dependent on prescription painkillers.

The Pain Relief Center of Los Angeles announced that it is now offering pain patients Acupuncture treatments as a correlative therapy to chiropractic treatments. Acupuncturist and herbalist Dr. Jill Harrison earned a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, maintains a B.A. in Religious Studies and Philosophy from Ithaca College, an M.A. in Developmental Psychology from Pacific Oaks College, and an M.S. in Oriental Medicine from Yo San University.

"We are also excited to introduce our newest acupuncturist to join the team, Lawrence Miller, L.Ac., a National Diplomat in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology, and member of the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM)," says Dr. Marinaro. Dr. Miller is also a board-certified Acupuncture Orthopedist through the National Board of Acupuncture Orthopedics (NBAO), and is an Addiction Recovery Specialist through the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA). He earned a B.S. in Environmental Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.S. in Chinese Medicine from Yo San University.

Acupuncture is rooted in an ancient Chinese healing tradition in which a trained healer would insert thin needles into pressure points along the body. The ancient Chinese believe that the body was made up of a life force, known as the Qi ("chi"), and that pain or injury were a result of blockages in the Qi. The thin needles stimulated the life force and removed the blockages, restoring balance to the body.

Today, science recognizes that this natural therapy works by stimulating the central nervous system, nerves, muscles and connective tissue. This stimulation increases blood flow and prompts the body to release natural painkillers that dull pain, boost the immune system and regulate the body's functions.

"Acupuncture is an important, complementary therapy that promotes internal healing and reduces back pain," said Dr. Marinaro. "As a chiropractor, I see time and time again that when used together chiropractic care and these treatments really do make a difference in the healing process, whether the patient is recovering from back pain or another personal injury."

Both Dr. Harrison and Dr. Miller work closely with the chiropractic team to tailor each session to an individual's unique needs, based on the source of pain and the type of injury. "I am very pleased that both exceptional doctors are practicing within our wellness center," said Dr. Marinaro. "They both have a natural and intuitive understanding of the human body, and their combined experience and direct guidance help patients unlock their own healing potential."

Dr. Harrison was working at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles as a psychotherapist when she first became interested in Chinese medicine. Encouraged by physicians to study internal medicine, Dr. Harrison sought to combine her interest in healing with a natural, whole body approach that treated the entire person, not just the symptoms. "Acupuncture is an effective treatment because it not only relieves pain, but also promotes internal healing. Many people have misconceptions about traditional Chinese healing," said Dr. Harrison. "The science behind it clearly shows that by stimulating trigger points, the central nervous system in the body is stimulated to heal."

Dr. Miller began his interest in holistic healthcare at the age of 21 after he successfully battled non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, an often fatal blood cancer. During this experience, he came to personally understand the forces at play in the development of imbalance and disease. His triumph became the basis for which he balances personal introspective with powerful medicinal treatments. Dr. Miller also participates competitively in the sport of Triathlon and is an Ironman finisher, and understands the impact of pain and injury on overall performance and well-being. "Chinese medicine is a brilliant system of healthcare, and the variety of treatment tools available to me as an Acupuncturist is unmatched in strictly conventional medicine. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine work remarkably well alongside chiropractic, physical therapy and all modalities of western medicine."

Dr. Miller is also the founder of My Herbalist Herbal Formulas, a comprehensive line of herbal supplements for adults and children that treat the most common health conditions. His very successful line is carried in select Whole Foods Markets.
