Imtech: 35 million euro orders for sustainable Dutch government's office buildings

June 8, 2011 - London

Gouda - Imtech (technical services provider in Europe) announces that it has obtained recent orders with a value of 35 million euro for further increasing the sustainability of Dutch government buildings. In addition to various sustainable new build initiatives, efforts to ensure greater energy efficiency are more often involved in technical management and maintenance. With its multidisciplinary technical total approach, which includes integrating innovative energy technology solutions, Imtech is in a position to realise substantial energy savings.

René van der Bruggen, CEO Imtech: 'The Dutch government is now often taking the initiative to make its properties more sustainable - with new build initiatives and during renovations, and maintenance operations. In addition to the government's CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policy, reduction in the building user's costs is also playing a role. In the Netherlands, Imtech is one of the strongest technical players in the area of energy efficiency and energy reduction. The recent orders confirm our strong position in this market. Furthermore, these orders fit well into our 2015 strategy to realise substantial growth in the market of technical energy solutions throughout Europe.'

Sustainability and the Dutch government
The Dutch government serves as an important example in terms of stimulating greater sustainability in the real estate sector. Because of this, increasing the sustainability of office buildings is high on the political agenda. The necessity of budget cuts gives an extra impulse to this trend. Now that operational costs need to be decreased, saving energy has been particularly appealing. Energy actually makes up a large part of rental costs; when energy consumption is decreased, this renders substantial financial savings. Strict building sustainability requirements are now imposed by the Dutch Government Buildings Agency, which is the largest renter of office space in the Netherlands. For example, rented office space must at least have a C energy label, and energy savings must be a focus for technical management and maintenance.

Imtech is making government offices more sustainable
Imtech has recently been involved in sustainable technical renovation and enlargement at the North Holland provincial government building in Haarlem. This is an ambitious sustainability project in which the energy performance coefficient (EPC) is being reduced to 0.5. The current Dutch Buildings Decree requires at least an EPC of 1.8. Furthermore, aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) is being utilised. This is an innovative sustainable energy system that uses aquifers (underground water-bearing formations) to store heat and cold and uses the groundwater as a heat carrier. This means that by using groundwater heating during the winter and cooling during the summer is possible. Energy consumption and carbon emissions are greatly reduced with this technology, as compared to conventional technology. Aquifer thermal energy storage only needs electricity for the environmentally friendly heat pumps for pumping the water around. This energy comes from renewable sources. In addition, there will be low temperature heating and high temperature cooling, sustainable LED lighting and numerous other smart 'green' technical solutions.

In the municipality of Weert's new city hall, Imtech is serving as the technology partner. Aquifer thermal energy storage is also being utilised here. Comparable technology solutions will also be employed in the municipality of Deurne's new housing service centre. Besides new build activities, Imtech is responsible for multi-year exploitation, and technical management and maintenance for both projects. Imtech is also playing an important role related to multi sustainable technology solutions for the new city hall in the municipality of Zaanstad.

Imtech recently received a four-year commission from the Dutch Government Buildings Agency to carry out the technical management and maintenance for more than 420,000 m² of office space. In addition to preventative and corrective maintenance, saving energy is an important priority for this commission. Based on the results of consultancy processes, more energy-saving technical solutions and systems will be implemented in the near future. This commission includes government buildings in Capelle a/d IJssel, Arnhem and Breda, as well as offices of the Dutch tax authorities, customs authorities, Netherlands Forensic Institute, National Police Services Agency and the law courts in The Hague. Reducing energy consumption is also a prime motivating factor in a commission related to technical management and maintenance in buildings owned by the municipality of Venlo.

Imtech has also entered into agreements to serve as the sustainable technology partner for activities related to the Energy City Arnhem programme and the Rotterdam Climate Initiative.
