Holman Automotive Recognized by American Heart Association as Worksite Fitness Innovation Company of 2011

December 30, 2011 - Pennsauken, NJ

Holman Automotive Group, one of the nation's top auto dealership and leasing companies, has been recognized by the American Heart Association as one of two Worksite Fitness Innovation Companies of 2011. The Biannual award is given to companies that develop and implement innovative and effective programs to promote physical activity in the workplace. Holman also earned an AHA Platinum-Level Start! Fit-Friendly designation. These prestigious awards further support and encourage Holman's overarching goal to foster companywide health and fitness.

"Physical activity and employee wellness are key priorities at Holman," said Mindy Holman, Preside and CEO of Holman Automotive Group, Inc. "We're honored and excited to be one of the two companies recognized by the American Heart Association this year, and we're eager to continue this commitment in 2012."

Workplace Fitness Innovation recipients must fulfill criteria for "Gold-level" recognition and implement at least six of the physical activities, two of the nutrition activities and one of the culture activities listed by Start! Holman has fulfilled each of these requirements through its Platinum-Level designation and the Healthier at Holman program. Among the program's features is a yearly Wellness Cup contest that promotes weight loss and activity. Employees are grouped in teams and the top 3 teams that lose the highest percentage of weight in a 3 month period are rewarded with a healthy lunch, trophies, and donations made to their favorite charities. Other elements of the program include bimonthly health newsletters and email blasts, a program website, weight loss videos, a take the stairs poster campaign, health focused lunch sessions, health club discounts, a healthy on-site bistro and much more.

The Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program is a catalyst for positive change in the American workforce by helping companies make their employees' health and wellness a priority.

American employers face increasing healthcare expenses and health-related losses in productivity that cost an estimated $225.8 billion a year. Many American adults spend most of their waking hours at sedentary jobs. Their lack of regular physical activity raises their risk for a host of medical problems, such as Obesity, high Blood Pressure and Diabetes. Employers face $12.7 billion in annual medical expenses due to Obesity alone. Start! helps change corporate cultures by motivating employees to start walking, which has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity.

Recognition is a critical component of the Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program. Employers that join this program qualify for official recognition by the American Heart Association. They are listed on the program's national Web site, as well as being honored at local events. Qualifying companies also have the right to use the program's annual recognition seal for internal communications and with external, recruitment-related communications.

Participating companies also get free access to program resources such as the free Start! Walking Program, materials to help promote company wellness programs to employees, internal newsletter templates and consultation on CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) programs.

Start! also offers MyStart! Online, a free Web-based fitness and nutrition tracker for companies and individuals. A "dashboard" feature lets HR or wellness managers view employee participation in Start!

About Start! Fit-Friendly Program (startwalkingnow.org)
"The Start! Fit-Friendly Companies Program offers a unique, easy-to-implement opportunity for corporations to increase employees' physical activity, which will help improve their health -- and their employers' bottom line," said Andrea Friedman, Regional Vice President, Southern New Jersey. "Even people who haven't exercised regularly until middle age can reap significant benefits by starting a walking program. A study published in 1986 in the New England Journal of Medicine found that some adults may gain two hours of life expectancy for every hour of regular, vigorous exercise they performed."
