Hays Post Earthquake Job Sentiment Survey: IT Professionals Most Vital to Japan's Earthquake Recovery

June 9, 2011 - Tokyo

Information Technology proved to be the most vital job function in managing the 11 March earthquake and its aftermath, according to a survey of over 200 CEO/directors, vice presidents, senior managing directors and HR professionals by recruiting experts Hays Specialist Recruitment Japan KK ("Hays Japan").

In the survey, 51 percent of companies said the IT function was the most important in managing the earthquake and its aftermath, followed by Human Resources (34.5 percent), Logistics (32.5 percent), then Sales (27 percent).

In other findings, the Hays Japan survey found that over one quarter (28.5 percent) of companies now plan to build their personnel base elsewhere in Japan. Kansai, Kyushu and Hokkaido are the preferences.

One in five companies changed the way they allocate their personnel resources as a result of the 11 March earthquake and its aftermath. Of these, 57.5 percent have dispersed personnel more widely across Japan, instead of concentrating them in Tokyo. A further 25 percent have begun hiring in areas where they did not have a specific role in the past. 10 percent have increased their focus on roles relating to business continuity such as IT, while another 10 percent have decided to outsource functions that were previously managed internally in order to diversify risk.

Six percent of companies have stopped hiring new graduates while eight percent have stopped hiring mid career.

"Our survey shows that both Japanese and international companies are making changes to their recruitment plans following the devastating earthquake in March," said Christine Wright, Managing Director of Hays Japan.

"One of the most significant changes has been the distribution of teams more widely across Japan, instead of concentrating them in Tokyo. We expect this trend to continue moving forward, with more companies building teams across a wider geographical area.

We also expect the demand for IT, HR and logistics staff to increase, given the critical role such professionals performed to ensure organisations could continue to operate in the aftermath of the tragedy."
