ET Water Receives 'Perfect Score' for HermitCrab on Irrigation Association's Smart Water Application Technology (SWAT) Performance Protocol Test

March 29, 2011 - Novato, CA

ET Water Systems, Inc., a green technology services company that specializes in water conservation, management, and smart irrigation control, today announced that its HermitCrab™ universal controller accessory, which converts conventional irrigation controllers to web-connected smart systems, received a perfect score on the Irrigation Association's Smart Water Application Technology™ (SWAT) Performance Protocol test. SWAT is a national partnership initiative of water purveyors and irrigation industry representatives created to promote landscape water use efficiency through an independent third party testing protocol specific to smart climatologically-based controllers.

HermitCrab is a small, self-contained weatherproof unit which easily plugs into a broad range of existing conventional irrigation controllers, immediately converting them into smart controllers that operate ET Water's award-winning web service to efficiently and remotely manage landscape irrigation.

The Center for Irrigation Technology (CIT), an independent testing laboratory at California State University, Fresno, conducted the rigorous month long test on HermitCrab to determine how well HermitCrab has integrated the scientific data into a practical system that meets the agronomic needs of turf and landscape plants. The test plan includes six distinct zones that are programmed to the controller with ten landscape parameters including soil type, vegetation, slope, precipitation rate, etc. CIT then measured how well the controller maintains the individual stations' moisture levels using ET and rainfall data from the CIMIS #78 weather station.

Highlights from HermitCrab's SWAT protocol are as follows:

  • HermitCrab received 100% score in irrigation adequacy. Irrigation Adequacy represents how well irrigation met the needs of the plant material. This reflects the percentage of required water for turf or plant material supplied by rainfall and controller-scheduled irrigations.
  • HermitCrab received 100% score in irrigation efficiency. Efficiency reflects how well irrigation cycles avoided direct runoff, soak runoff, and exceeding the root zone storage capacity.

"We have set a new standard with HermitCrab, the most innovative universal smart irrigation controller available for the commercial irrigation market today," said Pat McIntyre, CEO, ET Water Systems. "Our perfect score on the SWAT test will make the HermitCrab eligible for water agency rebates across the United States. We stand ready to fulfill the market demand of HermitCrab, a Made in the USA product, from our Santa Clara, CA manufacturing facility."

ET Water has played a significant role as a water champion with innovative technologies that reduce water consumption by up to 50% or more and improve landscape irrigation efficiency for thousands of customers across the United States, including property owners, property managers, landscape contractors and managers, municipalities and other public entities, water districts and water purveyors, among others.
