Dr. Gary Sykes Appointed ETS Senior Research Director

June 9, 2011 - Princeton, NJ

Dr. Gary Sykes, a professor in the Department of Teacher Education, College of Education, at Michigan State University, has been appointed Senior Research Director at Educational Testing Service (ETS). He will lead the Understanding Teaching Quality (UTQ) Research Center within ETS's R&D division.

As leader of the UTQ Center, Sykes will oversee, mentor and work with the team of researchers currently conducting work at ETS on the study of teaching quality across the career continuum.

"We are extremely pleased that Dr. Sykes is joining us," says Ida Lawrence, Senior Vice-President of R&D at ETS. "As we develop a strong research basis for a next generation of teaching quality assessments, his demonstrated leadership in issues of teacher education and educational policy will be key in helping us meet our mission goals."

Sykes's research interests have spanned a broad range of issues from teacher workforce policies to teacher education reforms, schools of choice, and leadership development in education. His current interests focus on contemporary issues related to teacher and teaching policy including evaluation; professional development; standards for entry; uses of incentives to address longstanding problems such as the inequitable distribution of teachers across schools; and related matters as represented in federal, state, and local policymaking.

Among his recent publications are the Handbook of Education Policy Research (2009; co-edited with Barbara Schneider and David Plank); and, with co-authors, a series of studies on teachers who are National Board-certified, appearing in Educational Administration Quarterly (2010); American Journal of Education (2010); and Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis (2008).

"I am very pleased that a scholar with Gary's vision and expertise is joining ETS R&D," added Vice-President of Research, Scott Paris. "He will be a key member of my leadership team, and his wide experience with many aspects of teaching policy and practice will be invaluable."

Sykes joins ETS on July 1, 2011.
