CMU College of Medicine Announces Financial Gifts

April 13, 2011 - Mount Pleasant, MI

Financial gifts finalized this week for the Central Michigan University College of Medicine have pushed the campaign to nearly 50 percent of its $25 million goal. CMU President George E. Ross announced Wednesday that new investments in the fundraising drive, which total more than $10 million, bring the current campaign total to $11.5 million.

Pledges in support of the College of Medicine will be dedicated to student scholarships, start up operations and facilities. A significant portion of the new pledges came from donors who stipulated their gifts remain anonymous.

"These investments demonstrate the significant need and support in Michigan to address a growing physician shortage and access to quality health care -- a need CMU is excited to work with communities in mid- and northern Michigan to address," said Dr. Ross. "We thank our donors for sharing our vision and interest in a unique medical education curriculum that will train physicians to practice primary care in rural areas of central and northern Michigan."

A volunteer, grass roots capital campaign was launched last spring chaired by W. Sidney Smith of Mount Pleasant and James C. Fabiano II of Saginaw. Dr. Malcolm Field of Saginaw is honorary chair of the campaign, which includes regional volunteer committees working across the state.

"We have been working for months with volunteers in regions of the state building momentum for the College of Medicine capital campaign," said Kathleen M. Wilbur, vice president of development and external relations at CMU. "The support, interest and excitement of prospective donors continue to grow as we share the story of how CMU and its clinical affiliates will utilize an innovative curriculum to train the next generation of physicians."

The CMU inaugural class of future physicians is anticipated to begin its studies in the summer of 2013.
