Robert Walters - Salaries Improving, Bonuses Stagnant in Japan Market

December 2, 2010 - Tokyo

Robert Walters PLC (LSE: RWA), one of the world's leading specialist professional recruitment consultancies, recently published results from its Employee Insight Survey (EIS) which shows changes in worker salaries and bonuses.

The survey conducted in Fall 2010 found that of the 839 Japanese professionals questioned, over 35% saw their salaries increase in 2010. Professionals within the medical sector were most likely to receive these pay rises. In contrast, about 30%, said that their salaries had decreased from 2009 to 2010: most prominently in the financial services (35%) and manufacturing sectors (36%). Interestingly the financial services and manufacturing sectors were the most likely to offer bonus increases to their staff, after some of the substantial pay cuts experienced during late 2009 and early 2010. This decision was perhaps reflective of the need to retain key staff as opportunities became more readily available in these sectors.

Bonus payments in other sectors, however, were in short supply as 37% of workers surveyed revealed that they had not received a bonus in 2010. The lack of bonuses was perhaps unsurprising as the 2010 payments were calculated based on revenues from the 2009 fiscal year. Respondents working in consumer goods (59%) and media (57%) were most likely to have received no bonus.

Bonus Change Dependent on Industry

David Swan, Managing Director of Robert Walters Japan commented: "Whilst we are finding that industries have been recovering at different rates, we expect bonuses to rebound strongly in 2011 with many in Japan remaining cautiously optimistic about the global economy."
