United Breweries limited Palakkad, is the proud recipient of 2007 State Pollution Control Award, instituted by Kerala State Pollution Control Board.

Thiruvananthapuram, June 6 : United Breweries limited Palakkad, is the proud recipient of 2007 State Pollution Control Award, instituted by Kerala State Pollution Control Board.

The award was given away by Srimathy Teacher, Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Kerala State, today, at a gala event held at Kottackattu Convention Centre, M.C.Road, Nalanchira, Thiruvananthapuram.

While in 2006, UB had ranked second in the same category, this time around they stood first amongst medium scale industries.

The State Pollution Control Award is an annual award instituted by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, to encourage Manufacturing and Service Organizations to make sustained efforts to protect environment and control all types of pollution during the calendar year.

Separate awards are distributed to large, medium and small-scale industries classified on the basis of their capital investment. The hospitals are categorized on the number of beds they have.

As the first prize recipient in medium scale industries, United Breweries limited received a trophy, certificate of merit and cash prize worth Rs 50000.

Speaking about the credible achievement, Cedric Vaz, Executive Vice President, Manufacturing, United Breweries Limited said, "We at UB are extremely proud of this honour bestowed upon us. In a world increasingly conscious about preserving the environment, United Breweries Limited - Palakkad, have consistently been proactive and have been making pioneering efforts in environment protection and preservation. It has been our constant endeavour to give back to the society that we work in, as much as we can. We will continue our efforts towards a "greener" environment and hope that such awards will encourage not just UBL but other industries in the area too, towards excellence in environment management."

The winners were chosen from among numerous applicants by an expert committee consisting of eminent academicians, environmentalists, scientists, KPCB officials and board members.

The assessment was made based on the quality and efficiency of pollution control and environment protection measures taken by the companies, cleanliness and hygiene of their premises, actions to control emission at source, submission of mandatory reports, adoption and implementation of new technologies and recycling of treated effluents.
