Growth of power sector should exceed growth rate of economy: Sushilkumar Shinde

Union Minister of Power Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday said that the growth of the power sector should be more than the growth rate of the economy for the country to gain power sufficiency over a period of time.

New Delhi, August 4 : Union Minister of Power Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday said that the growth of the power sector should be more than the growth rate of the economy for the country to gain power sufficiency over a period of time.

He said this at the inauguration of the induction program of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Executive Trainees-2008 (campus batch) today in New Delhi.

He said power sector of the country has got enriched by 464 young engineers joining NTPC to serve the nation.

In his address, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Power Jairam Ramesh said that retention of trained manpower is the biggest challenge before NTPC and the company should rework its policies to provide for higher education facilities and other aspirations of the young engineers.

Anil Razdan, Secretary Power, Rakesh Nath, Chairperson CEA and R.S. Sharma, CMD, NTPC also addressed the young entrants.

NTPC is inducting Executive Trainees to meet quality manpower requirement, in view of its massive capacity addition and diversification growth plans.

One of the major challenges before the company is recruitment of persons with high calibre, knowledge and skills. In line with its vision to become one of the largest and the best power utility in the world, NTPC believes in investing in human capital as the building block for high performance.

464 candidates from prestigious Engineering Institutes- NITs, IITs, ISM University, Dhanbad and IT-BHU in the areas of Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Civil, Mining and Architecture and Planning joined NTPC today.

The appointed candidates will undergo six months of classroom training followed by six months of on the job training at various Employee Development Centres located at different projects.

NTPC is also in the process of recruiting Executive Trainees (320 nos.) through All India Open Competitive Examination. In the written test conducted in May 2008 around 36000 candidates appeared. The first batch of Executive Trainees joined NTPC in the year 1978.
