Delhi Book Fair sees a rise in the sale of sex-oriented titles

Those days are gone when book fairs use to be a treat for intellectuals, students and academic.

New Delhi, Sept. 6 : Those days are gone when book fairs use to be a treat for intellectuals, students and academic.

At the ongoing 13th Delhi Book Fair at New Delhi's Pragati Maidan here, sex-oriented books enjoyed good sales in comparison to books on literature and other subjects.

Stalls at the fair have stocked books based on sex, be it novels, informative books or science.

According to the organisers, the subject has universal appeal, and therefore, is high on demand.

"Sex books will always remain popular. I can say the Kamasutra has been published many times, and it's still selling. If something new comes in Kamasutra it will sell as well. This is a subject which has universal appeal," said Shakti Malik, one of the organisers.

Writers too feel that connoisseurs are embracing a more liberal outlook.

"I think readers are not only interested in literature, poetry, drama or criticism. They are more interested in application oriented or informative books. Even the parents are quite liberal. So, they allow their children or they themselves read these kinds of books. The scenario has definitely changed," said Devyani Abhyankar, a writer.

Around 235 publishers from seven countries, including Pakistan and China are taking part in the week-long fair.

The 13th Delhi Book Fair ends on September 9.
