New Delhi, Oct 25 : The Union Cabinet on Thursday announced its decision to partially lift the ban imposed on the export of non-basmati rice.
This decision was taken after a meeting between Union Commerce Minister Kamal Nath, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
On October 9, the government had imposed a ban on export of all non-basmati rice to augment domestic stocks.
However, farmers and exporters opposed this decision, as the ban plummeted the prices in the domestic market.
"The Cabinet has decided to withdraw the export ban on premium quality non-basmati rice, priced above 425 dollars per tonne, restricted to the non-basmati superior quality and not to the rice in PDS (Public Distribution System) distribution," said Union Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Das Munshi.
The ban has been partially lifted as only premium qualities of rice have been given the go ahead for export. The step is likely to provide some relief to the exporters and the farmers.
